How does Heathen Toast Studios design a custom character?

Step One: Discovery and Research
This is where you transfer the ideas in your head(s) to the artist. To aid in this process, Heathen Toast Studios will send you a short questionnaire to help you get your ideas, thoughts and goals down on paper.  Your ideas and goals will help the artist create concept sketches of your character!  Feel free to give the artist as much as or little creative freedom as you wish!

Step Two: The Sketches
This is where your character comes to life! You will receive 4 different rough sketches of your character. You can choose 1 character out of the four, or or mix and match! It’s all up to you.

Some common requests at this point are:

“Keep the body from sketch A, but use the head from sketch B.”
“I love sketch D, but please lose the cape.”
“I like character C, but can you make him more happy?”
“Give the character bigger eyes.”
“I would like a more confident stance.”
“Make her taller/shorter.”
“More realistic/cartoony.”

Step Three: Colouring
Once you’ve decided on a final version of the character, it’s time to add colour! This is when your character really starts to come to life. The first step is deciding on the thickness of outlines. Will they be thick, thin or non at all?

Now it’s time to pick your colours! Do you go with your favourite colour, a symbolic colour, or maybe your corporate or team colours? Colours are just as important as the look. Think of famous characters: Spider-Man, Batman, Tony the Tiger, Kermit the Frog… when recalled certain colours instantly come to mind.

Finally it’s time to decide on flat colours or gradient colours. Flat colour is tried, tested and true. It’s the traditional look of the comics and cartoons you grew up loving. This classic look is still relevant today! Gradient colour is a popular modern look, utilizing smooth shading.

Step Four: Delivery
It’s time for the final and most simple step in the birth of your character, when it’s final form is handed over to you. Along with rights, you will receive your character in the full colour version, greyscale version, black and white version, all in multiple digital formats!
